Nebraska’s 1st Christmas Box Angel

Living Memorial Gardens – Angel of Hope

Sidney, Nebraska - Angel #87

The Angel of Hope Project began in January, 2008, when permission was granted from both the Board of the Living Memorial Gardens and the City of Sidney for the Angel to be placed in the former baby pool area of the Gardens.  Working beside Steve and Rita Schinzel-Anest throughout the Angel of Hope Project was Lloyd and Carolyn Guggenmos, in loving memory of Rita’s infant daughter and the Guggenmos’ daughter, Jean Marie.

Lou Ann Herstead, monument designer for Herstead Monument Company, was instrumental in the overall design, choice of stone and a multitude of other decisions.  Lou Ann spent several months designing and redesigning the Project, placing the bronze Angel of Hope statue in the center of the former baby pool, then incorporating seven granite reflection benches, 285 12” x 12” granite tiles on the 4 foot Memory Walls, and 142 10” x 10” granite tiles as Memory Capstones around the raised flowers beds surrounding the Angel of Hope statue.

The Angel of Hope Project was presented to the Cheyenne County Visitor’s Committee in May of 2008, who voted unanimously to cover the entire $14,500.00 for the bronze angel.  Nebraska’s 1st Christmas Box Angel was officially ordered on May 15, 2008, and welcomed to her Garden of Hope on October 25, 2008, with a crowd of over 100 people in attendance.  When the official dedication of the Angel of Hope was held less than one year later on September 26, 2009, over two-thirds of the Memory Wall Tiles and Memory Capstones had been engraved in memory of loved ones.

There are over 118 Christmas Box Angels placed throughout the world, dedicated to those who have suffered the loss of a child.  Nebraska’s 1st Christmas Box Angel is #87, and the onlyAngel dedicated to all loved ones lost too soon.  Our vision was that the Angel of Hope would be not only for those of us who had suffered the loss of a child, but for everyone – those who have endured the loss of a spouse, one or both parents, grandchild, sibling, or other family members and friends; those coping with an illness or terminal disease and their families; teenagers who struggle and feel lost; or someone who feels so hopeless that they don’t feel they can go on – we want the Angel of Hope to be a place of healing, in a beautiful garden setting.  May you find Peace in her presence, and Hope beneath her wings.
